What We Are Feeding Right Now

Since we have just recently started feeding raw, we are starting with chicken only as it is the easiest and less pungent meat to transition all our cats from dry and wet to raw.

         Our Recipe:

  • 50 pounds (80%) of whole chickens, eviscerated
  • 5 pounds (10%) of chicken liver.
  • We also add in 5% chicken hearts occasionally for added taurine, although the dark meat from the chicken legs has enough. *If you are not using dark meat then 10% should be heart* & other 70% meat.
  • We do include most of the bones as well. Except the couple largest bones in the legs and wings. (10%)
  • Also, keep the skin on as it is high in fat and very good for them. (Part of the muscle meat (80%))
  • Right now, we grind up all our raw as it is the easiest way to feed the mothers and kittens at the same time. We give the adults each a bone a week to chew on for their teeth health.
  • It is good for them to chew on bones so you can absolutely cut EVERYTHING into chunks instead of grinding!!!
  • We also add in 18 whole eggs (no shell because we use bone) (1-2 eggs for every 3 lbs. of meat)
  • Also, any liquid in the bottom of the bags/containers, add back into the raw. It is great for them.
    • Once all our cats have adjusted, we will switch it up and use some beef or pork occasionally.

Tips and Tricks to help switching to raw

  • You want to transition slowly. Adding in a little bit with their regular food.
  • Stop free feeding - get them used to eating 2-3 times a day
  • Try offering boiled chicken meat (no bone)

If your cat/kitten is not wanting to eat the raw because their are new to it or because you added in a new meat, you can try to add in a few different things to help.

  • Tomato sauce (No onion or garlic)
  • Sardine in tomato sauce
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Extra water
  • Kitten formula
  • Half canned wet/half raw

Miscellaneous & Pre-made

The easiest ratio is 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% secreting organ. You don't need to measure down to the gram, just get pretty close.

You DO NOT need supplements if you are feeding a balanced raw diet!

They will also not need to drink a lot of water when eating a raw diet. Most of their water will come from their raw food.

You can use a variety of animals, trying 1 new one at a time (similar to giving a baby 1 new food at a time). I would say 1 new animal every couple months is enough if you want to. Examples are chicken, of course, beef, pork, lamb, turkey, quail, rabbit, duck, goat, deer and pheasant.

Do your research on fish, it can be high in mercury and dangerous. *Sardines are good though!*

If making your own is not something you want to do then buying pre-made raw from a store or having it delivered to your house is another option. We have a few links to some of the best pre-made raw down below. Buying it pre-made is, of course, more expensive than doing it yourself. You pay for the convenience. Darwin's is easiest to start with.

You can also ask your local butchers. Some butchers make up raw food and sell it and it is cheaper than the other pre-made options. As always, do your research with what they use and their percentages etc.

Secreting Organs

We started with just 10% liver as it was easiest to get everyone transitioned. We will be switching to 5% liver and 5% other secreting organ (chicken kidney or spleen to start).
